NWOBHM is celebrating its 25th anniversary, which is an appropriate moment for Geoff Gillespie and his Majestic Rock Records to re-visit some of the genre’s ‘finer’ exponents. Bitches Sin, founded in April 1980, is one of many bands that set the UK on fire at the beginning of the 80s. On August 6 & 7, 1980 they ventured to the Smile Studios in Manchester, where they recorded their first demo over a period of about 10 hours, setting up and mixing included! The 7-track demo tape - featured on this re-issue in its entirety - was called “?12 And No Kinks” (named after a call girl ad!) and was in fact the band’s first ever visit to a recording studio. The tape came to the attention of Neat Records, who offered to issue a single. The result was the band’s debut 7” release “Always Ready For Love” b/w “Sign Of The Times”. After that, the band went on to record another demo, “Your Place Or Mine”, after which Ian Toomey contacted The Friday Rock Show’s producer Tony Wilson to sound him out about a possible appearance in his show. Wilson liked what he heard and invited Bitches Sin to the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios. By the time they arrived there – on August 26, 1981 – the band boasted a quite different line-up with Tony Tomkinson on vocals, Dave Newsham on bass and Tony Leece on drums supporting the Toomey brothers. The session was broadcast on October 16, 1981 and led to the offer of an album by Heavy Metal Records. “Predator” was recorded in April/May 1982 and got a wide variety of reviews. Another album (“Invaders”, recorded with yet another line-up) followed in 1986, but by the time it was released, the metal scene had changed a lot. Internal and external pressure on the band ultimately caused them to call it a day. Good news for the fans however: the band is now back in business and is currently working on material for their long overdue third album. In the meantime you can whet your appetite with this surprisingly well sounding ‘re-issue’, featuring the band’s first demo (tracks 1-7) and the legendary Friday Rock Show session for the BBC (tracks 8-11). (CL)
