Italian neo-classical/power/speed metal band Skylark have had quite a spectacular underground following since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album “Dragon’s Secrets”. Yours truly however has never really been into the material of this band, which is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Eddy Antonini. The outfit has been very productive through the years nevertheless, having released 5 studio albums and 3 EPs in a course of 6 years, from 1995 to 2001. The last three years it has been very quiet from their side though, until recently when their new label Scarlet Records released Skylark’s sixth studio album “Wings”, the first of a 2-part concept album.
Enough mathematics, you want to know if you should consider buying this of course. Well, it hasn’t blown me away to say the least. It’s not new and charming female vocalist Kiara that I don’t like, nor is it the basic idea behind the songs, nor the concept. It’s mostly the flat and dull sound of the album that prevents me from liking this. The drums of Carlos sound like they come straight out of a drum computer, the guitars and piano sound as if they were recorded somewhere totally else and the mix of the instruments in times ruins the balance of the songs, speaking of which are rather uninspired. “Summer Of 2001” or “A Stupid Song” are cuts that should be left aside if you actually want to sell anything. And with a poor cover of Def Leppard’s “When Love And Hate Collide”, your credibility as a neo-classical power metal band will not raise if anything.
Part 2 of “Wings” and a yet untitled album, labelled as – oh dear – ‘The Best Album’ on the band’s website, are coming up in the next year or so. I won’t really care to be honest… (

Very beautifull album!!! The guitar aren't very present and powerfull, they use more key than guitar, the last song (when love and hate collide by Def Leppard) made with the key is very beauty!!!
