Although “The Last Dance” is the 43rd album of Ken Hensley’s career, it’s a recording that gave him a lot of pleasure from recording. Ken: “So much was new for me in this experience: the studio, the players and so many other parts of the puzzle, my first winter in Spain (where he’s now living), a lot of the techniques we used, and of course the songs.” I have to add that I didn’t expect such a high quality from this veteran. Earlier solo albums of his didn’t really knock me down, so I have to admit that I wasn’t really inquisitive about this one. However, it turns out as what I’d like to call his best solo album ever. The quality of the songs is surprisingly strong, as well as his vocals (not that he is a fantastic singer though!) and the performances of the musicians who are backing him up. Count to that a really informative booklet (24 pages), including all lyrics and personal comment on all tracks and you have an album that is finished. The only thing that goes against the grain, is the rather poor front cover, but don’t let this guide you away from what’s more important. After all beauty comes from the inside, doesn’t it? A rather peaceful album, but one that is surprisingly well-crafted! Take advantage of it! ( CL)
