After two self produced demo CDs - "ATT - Abstractive Fallacy" (1999) and "Time Before" (2000) - Italian power/progressive metal act Concept have now released their debut album "Reason And Truth".
Clearly inspired by early Elegy, thanks to the high pitched vocals of Gianni Carcione that resemble those of Elegy’s former vocalist Eduard A. Hovinga, and the mother of all Italian power metal bands Lab?rinth, their technical brand of metal certainly is appealing. Although it lacks maturity in some places, both vocal and instrumental wise, their song material is above average for today’s power metal terms. Tracks like “Living A Lie” or the epic “Death Of Reason” always go in with yours truly, not remarkably the more progressive pieces of this album that distinguish Concept from the majority of Italian power metal bands, who merely concentrate on speed.
After the release of "Reason And Truth", Luca Urbinati of Zen fame, came to replace drummer David Folchitto. Those who remember Zen from their only but fabulous 1997 release “Gaze Into The Light” will know that this can only add to the band’s overall quality. “Reason And Truth” is not an obligatory release, but it’s certainly recommended to fans and followers of the Italian scene. There’s plenty of room left for improvement and I’m pretty curious to hear what this disc’s follow-up will sound like. (SL)
