AOR & melodic (hard) rock

It rarely happens that I get such an impressive promo package from an indie band like this one from Days Before Tomorrow. DBT is an American progressive rock band, that made its debut with a self-titled EP in 2006. Favourable reviews followed and Eric Klein (lv) & Scott Kahn (g) knew that they were on the right track. In the years that followed they added a second guitarist and a strong rhythm section and adjusted their sound in a somewhat heavier and more adventurous direction.
One of the first things that caught my attention – while listening to “The Sky Is Falling” – were the names of the producer and the mixer. How an indie band can afford a legend as Ron Nevison to produce their first full-length album is a mystery to me, but it’s indeed he – known from Damn Yankees, Europe, Heart, Kiss, Led Zeppelin & The Who among others – who did the honours. And the mixing guy was nobody else than Earl Cohen, who previously worked with artists like Christina Aguilera, Will Smith, Tina Turner and Usher. So, sonically everything is over the top! But that’s of course not all and not enough to impress the listener, is it? But to cut a long story short: the rest is also very impressive. The guys in DBT know how to write progressive songs with catchy melodies and strong hooks and the album doesn’t bore for a single second. As such, it doesn’t surprise me to hear that the band will be performing at this year’s Los Angeles Music Awards, where they have been nominated in the category ‘Record of the Year’. Take it from me: it won’t be long before they get signed … (CL)
