This is an American band… you’d guess if you see or hear them for the first time. Like me, you’d be totally wrong as all three members of Coma Star are European. Frontman Emmi – we’re missing a last name again… - was born in Switzerland (country of Gotthard and Krokus a.o.), while guitarist Jan Janson and drummer Christian Werr are German.
The States played a big role in the short history of the band however, as it was in Los Angeles that Coma Star took its final form and that the songs of their debut album “Headroom Of Conscience” were written. With that in mind, it’s quite remarkable that this disc was released on the European Locomotive Music. Coma Star must be the odd man out on the label. There’s not a song on the debut that could not be in the popular charts around here. The trio’s sound is so alternative – almost nu breed, sometimes nu metal, then again I’m hearing Harem Scarem wearing Rubber – that it could be called regular MTV material.
Although there are some songs on “Headroom Of Conscience”, especially the first few, that sound appealing, I’d be surprised if there’s anyone of you reading this, who thinks this is great stuff. It is melodic, it is rock, but it’s a bit too alternative in my opinion. Not bad, but not what I’m living for… (
