Sometimes beautiful little pearls are hidden in dark alleys, dusty corners and/or roadside grills of a dubious nature, where after 12 o’clock the ones behind the bar serve a different kind of food. With added chili or black pepper, if needed.
Besides this reviewer’s imagination running wild there’s a point to all this blabber: beautiful music sometimes comes to you when you'd least expect it or from sources you never knew existed. Take this Bill Cutler for instance, completely unknown to me but a long-time talent nevertheless. This particular platter took a couple of decennia to finish. Or so the story goes. Started in the 70’s up until the 80’s, then 18 years nothing & just recently finished.
The result is surprisingly consistent & holds some pop-, American & roots rock gems starting with the heavenly opening trio of ‘Engine 99’, ‘Cry Of The City’ & ‘Rockingham Hill’. The latter with Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) on guitar, no less.
It would take too long & half a page to provide a word of explanation of everyone present on this record but it suffices to say that this is a welcome addition to the soundtrack of the coming summer. Especially those who wouldn’t say no to Jackson Browne, a more mellow than usual John Cougar Mellencamp or just a good singer songwriter album should definitely check this Bill Cutler out. A nice surprise! (KVK)
