Sometimes you just know. It can be the cover, a band pic, the opening chords of a song or an album, a vibe. Sometimes you just know that the data carrier spinning round in your player is not just that, a data carrier. It holds music that immediately takes residence in your head and stays there for an awkward long time. Suddenly in these plastic music infested times there’s hope…
Voodoo Six is one of those bands that have it in them to change or create a whole musical scene. The right combination of history & grandeur but with just enough contemporary elements to not alienate the kids of today. And they have Maiden’s Steve Harris on their side, which still stands for something, don’t you think?
The boys pay tribute to the bands that made heavy music what it is today: Sabbath, Zeppelin, Maiden, a tad of 80’s hair and a sniff of 90’s pathos (think of a super heavy Mother Love Bone). It’s all here mingled in an emotional, guitar solos laden and cocky bitches brew. Add to that a singer who wails like a banshee in heat and we have a sure recipe for success, no holds barred.
An album like this is of course a highlight on its own but recommended listening for the newcomers is the mighty power ballad ‘Saints & Sinners’ (with more solos than the average Guns ‘N’ Roses record), the heavily stomping ‘Walking On Nails’ & the perfect metal song ‘No Friend Of Mine’.
And I won’t go into the excellent craftsmanship that these musicians display or you might start thinking I have financial gains one way or the other with this band.
Oh, and it’s re-mixed by Mike Fraser (Van Halen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, Thunder, The Cult, Coverdale/Page, …)
Well, sometimes you just know… (KVK)

The overall sound is totally 70s – early 80s- aggressive hard rock modernized so as to blend in with the ambition of a newcomer band that wants to feel unique and not a replica.
Well, as regards this, allow me to have my doubts. Although the atmosphere is intense, the guitars are heavy and musicianship is more than satisfactory, some things aren’t so bright.
For example, the songs sound too identical at times, yet there are some genuine highlights, like “Faith”, “Walking On Nails” (is something wrong with me or the intro extremely reminds Because the Night by Patti Smith?), “Saints & Sinners” (great track by all means), “Mistaken” (a song complete in every detail) and “Crawl”.
Nevertheless, the rest of the track list seems to be wandering through the same paths and it lacks verve.
In a comparison with Answer the result is obviously on the side of V6, but is this enough to regenerate the hard rock scene or being reputed as the next big thing?

You know your onto a winner when a rock album starts with the sound of falling rain, howling winds, the crackle of thunder and a church bell ringing in the back ground. Voodoo Six have most definitely read the heavy metal rule book page by page and implemented everything they have learned into this release. Openers 'Faith', 'No Friend' & 'Feed My Soul' all sound like a cross between Black Sabbath and Audioslave, giving the album an heavy familiar solid sound. Highlights include the excellent 'Walking On Nails' which has Tony Iommi's Monolithic style riffs all over it. 'Saints & Sinners' which oozes sheer class, and the epic sounding ballad 'Mistaken'. A couple of tracks towards the tail end of this disc are not quite up to the standards set previously, but this is still a very good album that stomps along at a similar pace thoughout.

Got the original CD 'Feed Your Soul' and I must admit this re-mixed w/extra track CD version 'First Hit For Free' is like a new lease on life for the U.K. rock n roll machine. Classic hard rock with a modern bent, Voodoo Six should become huge rockstars in a fair world.

Great band...I have the original "Feed My Soul" album minus the song Faith...and it's a great CD so I'm sure this Mike Fraser mixed reissue kicks some serious ass and I will be picking up this new improved version ASAP...I would give Feed My Soul 5 1/2 star so I'll do the same for this CD...but maybe after hearing the new mix it'll be a 6.
