power/heavy/other metal

Lars Chriss and Sampo Axelsson … aren’t they both members of Lion’s Share? Yes, they are and with “Emotional Coma”, they delivered their heaviest album so far. Several tracks they had written for that album didn’t fit the heavy metal style they were going after and since that material was way too good to be thrown away, it was Sampo who came up with the idea of doing something with it. As both gentlemen grew up with the music of classic hard rock bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, they decided to use the material and issue it as a kind of tribute or celebration to what got them picking up an instrument in the first place.
When all the songs were written, they approached drummer Thomas Broman (Electric Boys, Audiovision, HTP) to record the drum parts. As soon as the basic parts were recorded, the guys got in touch with Matti Alfonzetti (Jagged Edge, Skintrade) and asked him if he would be interested in joining in as lead vocalist. Luckily he was and after having recorded the vocal parts in his own studio, the album was ready to be mixed.
Featuring only 9 tracks, “Road To Ruin” might seem a bit short, but clocking in at 40 minutes 41 seconds, there’s (just) enough material to satisfy all lovers of classis 70s and 80s hard rock, brought by a bunch of seasoned musicians who all know the tricks of the music trade. The price for best track goes to “For Your Soul”, but opener “The Only One” (featuring an intro that could have been from vintage Rainbow) and “Face Of An Angel” are also more than interesting.
As all members of Road To Ruin are involved in other projects, it remains to be seen if another album will follow this debut. Maybe we have to wait for another bunch of Lion’s Share leftovers first … (CL)

Hmmmm... what to write about this album? Let's just say that it is pretty good, but not any more than that. It took some time for me to get into the album, even though the credentials of the band are very strong. It actually gets better towards the end, as I found some of the earlier songs a tad dull. There's no doubting Alfonzetti's vocal talents, and they fit well here. Chriss and Axelsson also play their instruments with aplomb. I still prefer Lion's Share, which is out-and-out metal, but this ain't bad. One downer: the liner of my version claims there is a bonus track (Wheels of the World) but there wasn't any!!! Not good PR for Metal Heaven, that...

very good CD It's a SUPERGROUP indeed ! The strong point is the FANTASTIC work by one of the most underated singer in SWEDEN the mighty MATTI ALFONEZTTI (exJAGGED EDGE/SKINTRADE but don't forget his great solo band ALFONEZTTI with a great CD 'ready' in 2000 and his great input in THE POODLES and years ago some recording with the genius TALISMAN) If you love old school MELODIC HARD ROCK with melodies and strong production....THEN buy it !!!

Astral Door's have a challenger to their melodic metal/hard rock crown . Alfonzetti is back to what he does best singing , and the song's rock , nuff said .
