No, this is not a review of the Avalon album you are all expecting from Frontiers Records later this month, but an overview of material that was recorded by the Dutch band Avalon between 1980 and 2006. Although the band was founded in 1980, I first heard about them when news filtered through that guitarist Jack Pisters had won a guitar from Gary Moore in a competition organised by KRO and Virgin. Concert promotor MOJO was so impressed that they asked Avalon to play as support for Moore, but unfortunately, this didn’t lead to a major record contract. An indie record label by the name of Dynamo signed the band and released the mini-album “The Third Move” at the beginning of 1986. It was the first and the last Avalon record ever released.
What we have here with “The Final Move” is a double compilation album featuring the classic mini album “The Third Move” plus 4 re-recorded tracks and tons of previously unreleased material. Next to the six songs of “The Third Move”, disc one also contains two songs that were recorded in 1987 (“Break Away” and “Day By Day”), four songs that were (re-)recorded earlier this year (“Prophets In Disguise”, “The Ancient (Part I)”, “Can’t Take My Eyes From You” and “It Ain’t Easy”) plus “Goliath’s Hide”, which was recorded in 1988. Disc two, which is called “The Lost Tapes”, contains 14 tracks (from 1984-1988) that were all remastered from the band’s original demo cassette tapes.
Although the sound quality differs througout the album, this is a document I can really recommend to all the Dutch fans of this symphonic/melodic hard rock band. For many of you, this beautiful packaged release (digipak, booklet with pictures of the 11 different line-ups …) will make an end to your long search for a vinyl copy of the mini-album. (
