Formed in 1968, British progressive rockers Yes are delivering the goods with success for over more than 40 years. Despite the many line-up changes, occasional splits and musical changes the band still retain a strong following.

Due to illness in 2008, Jon Anderson couldn’t perform for a while and his fellow members Howe, Squire and White choose not to wait and recruited Canadian Benoit David (lead singer for Yes tribute band Close To The Edge) as a new member. Not content with this decision, keyboard player Rick Wakeman stepped down and was replaced by his son Oliver. Earlier this year, Oliver was replaced by Geoff Downes (Asia) who played with Yes at the time of the “Drama” album. With producer Trevor Horn (The Buggles), Yes recorded a new album “Fly From Here”, the first in ten years.

The AB was almost sold out tonight when they kicked off with ‘Yours Is No Disgrace’ followed by ‘Tempus Fugit’. Vocally, Benoit David is a dead ringer for Jon Anderson, but on the more high-pitched, difficult parts he frequently went off the road. Furthermore he lacks both charisma and presence, something Anderson had in abundance. When the excellent parts of ‘Fly From Here’ were due though, he was spot on. Mixed with some great footage on a big video wall this was actually one of the highlights of the show. With sharp dynamic contrasts, lush harmonies, often extended song lengths and a general showcasing of members' instrumental prowess this was certainly an entertaining set. Especially guitarist Steve Howe impressed with a flawless mix of technique and melody and his acoustic intermezzo was magical. Also Geoff Downes displayed a huge improvement on keyboards. After ‘Wonderous Stories’, ‘Into The Storm’ and ‘Machine Messiah’ it was time for the grand finale with ’Starship Trooper’ and of course ‘Roundabout’. Although at times I missed both Anderson and Wakeman, Yes proved they still have a lot to offer to put on an excellent show. And if they continue to make superb albums like “Fly From Here”, they have my blessing to continue for a long time!
