VALERIE - Valerie (2012)

VALERIE is a young and ambitious hard rock/glam metal band from Arendal; a small town in southern Norway. Known for their big choruses and guitar riffs, along with blistering guitar solos.

Oh my...... I was curios enough to waste my precious time and click on the youtube link to check this band out..... well, it turned out to be exactly what I excepted, nothing. The riff in the beginning is clearly ripped off of so many other songs. If musicians decided to sue for their riffs than Scandi music would be damned forever with a few exceptions. The chorus follows the ''one in a million'' riff and everything else is predictable like walking on two feet. I cheer for this band and appreciate their enthusiasm, but they really need a reality check to know they're going nowhere with this type of songwriting.....

I agree with shawn !!!
If some find this good, there must be something wrong with their taste and knowledge about REAL music !!!
This is once again plastic, artificial, formula stuff and this time even not well done at all !!!
This is too bad for words !!!
That singer, oh dear !!!
It's not because you hear some guitar or so, it's automatically good, guys !!!
I feel sorry for these guys and their enthusiasm, but they are not ready for releasing an album !
And indeed, someone has to say it : that whole scandi scene is so OVERRATED !!!
Some decent bands, agreed, but a whole bunch of third rate stuff !!!
Far, far from the real stuff !!!
Wake up !!!

If I were the bass player I would be ashamed of such mediocrity displayed on the bass lines.....

See guys, it's not that I hate everything new, it's that not everything new is worth listening to only because it's new and from Sweden and close vicinities........

I also used to play the bass and those basslines suck out of my skull.... I would be ashamed by that. I won't lie and say that band is good when it actually sucks, it's even good for them, this way they can try and improve instead of being misled by positive comments like yours. Also, If anything is public it's bound to be judged and discussed, after all, isn't it what this forum is all about? Heheheh. Unless you're part of that band, right? So you're taking it personal.

It's nothing personal man, and I'm not a band member. I'm a guitarist who is searchin' for a band .
This forum is for sharing our passion for our music...to discover some new bands...to talk about everything. The last month is the same thing....the 'oldies' vs the 'newbees'. It's also a 'war' against to some new bands such as h.e.a.t./dynazty/valerie e.t.c. You don't like this...I don't like that....bla bla bla...it's really a bit boring imho. That's all

But to stay on topic , let's say that this CD by VALERIE is very disappointing...There is plenty of young band in this style much more talented...Don't ask for a list ....Please !

Agreed Yngwie. And what a better example than our own Yngwie J. Malmsteen? He arrived in a tender age in the U.S.A. and against all odds became a legend on his own merit, that's what I call talent. It's very easy to have a band, but a good one...... ahh, that's a whole different story, so please, let's support the good bands and give advices to the bad ones (they have to learn how to take up criticism), it's as fair as it gets.

guitarman : with all respect, but indeed ! It's often new against old, like it or not !
Just listened to and saw the new clips of both Aerosmith and Kiss ! Aerosmith with 'Legendary Child' and Kiss with 'Hell Or Hallelujah' and what's the conclusion : they still have it and together with other oldies like Rush or Asia etc. they still have a lot more to offer than the newies ! I'm sorry !!!
And Elival : they both ROCK !!!, in their typical, unique style, that extra talent that 99% of the newies are sadly missing !
The oldies still RULE !!! and blow the newies out of the window !!!
To the guys of Valerie : don't give up but listen carefully how it should be done !!!

To YNGWIE !!

No, you're wrong, mate ! It's not a matter of state of mind, it's simply about FACTS !!!
If you compare Valerie or some other newies to the new stuff from Aerosmith or Kiss, then the conclusion is made so easy : no comparison possible, cause the 'oldies' play in a league of their own, head and shoulders above 99% of the 'newies'.
The problem is that there is not that much good music by newies, I'm sorry !!!
I know that good music is good music, but then the music has to be good, and that 's not the case by most 'newies'.
I really hope that more 'newies' can offer good stuff, cause it's necessary for melodic rock that there is some new blood, but 'till now I'm not convinced !!!
Hope they can prove me wrong !!! Hope some 'newies' will blow me away with their music !
Keep on

There are no such things as facts when it comes to taste !!! I do agree however that Valerie is not even worth to be compared with the bands you mentioned. But there are a lot other new bands who can compete with the oldies.

Hey Pompy, this week i'm drive-she-said-ized by Al Fritsch and Mark Mangold , and i 'm asking myself which current band can compete with this kind of band ; i'm with your opinion at 100% (as very often) ; i hope Al and Mark will release a next album , showing again and again who are the masters of the melodic hard rock

Pompy, I'm sure that you know that I'm an 80's, early 90's freak!!!! There's no doubt about this!!!! But that was then this is now man.......open your mind and ears and discover some really kick-ass newbess that rock hard as their idols from 70's, 80's..90's. I never said that Valerie can be compared of with some legendary bands.....but at least the guys are givin' heart and soul to deliver some decent music......

Hi Axe, yeah man, don't know if they ever will release a new album under the monicker of Drive She Said, but I surely hope it, cause I miss such a great band !!!
I thought that they would do a new album for AOR Heaven, but no sign at all until now ! Let's cross our fingers !!! Who knows ?!
To Elival and guitarman : guys, I really hope that some new bands come with great stuff, but until now most of 'em can't compete with the 'oldies' !
Sad but true.
Some have potential, but are still not on the same level as the 'oldies' !

Right, guitarman, but not completely right !
I do like their first two records, which are great !!!
But after these they drastically changed their style to a sort of new wave of melodic rock and then it was over for me ! And from then on they were indeed a third rate band ! So bad !!! Urghh !!!
No hard feelings from my side too, mate !

I don't agree Axe, "Weight Of The World', 'Human Nature" & "Higher" are very good melodic rock releases. The fact is that the last few days I'm listening the "Human Nature" and I'm completely surprised of its melody!!!! I just love this one and reminds me the band's glory days!!!! But again it's a matter of music taste

well, a friend of mine told me that once, and i was surprised; he loves Harem Scarem and Nickelback and personnally i didn't know the music of Nickelback because it's not my kind of music , and i must admit he was right ; i find that Harem Scarem plays a kind of modern melodic rock ala Nickelback since a decade. It's not the traditional melodic hard rock of their early years.
when i listen to "mood swings", i think about Winger, but if i listen to "higher", i would say easily Nickelback, or this wave of alternative/melodic rock band.
in my opinion only of course.

the only time that i heard the traditional Harem Scarem sound again was on the VOICES OF ROCK vol. 1 album about the Harry Hess song. He came back to his roots with "irresistible".

i have every HAREM SCAREM album except the last one ("hope");
on "human nature", i like the title track , "starlight" too, and a few other tracks, but the modern direction about some vocals parts and some rhythm guitars parts become boring quicky for my ears.

After their two first ones, it was all modern rock they offered ! Indeed, a lot closer to Nickelback than to Foreigner !!!

Foreigner? Why compared them to Foreigner? Harem Scarem made lots of great albums, allthough the 2 first are the best ones. And if it gets modern, no problem for me as long as they still sound good.
